From July 4th to 6th 2025, Singapore had the honor of welcoming one of the world’s top outrigger canoe coaches — Corrina Gage — for an intensive 3-day training program designed to level up both athletes and aspiring coaches in the local Va’a community.
Corrina, a renowned athlete and coach from New Zealand, is internationally recognized for her deep expertise in steering, V1 paddling, and crew dynamics. She’s worked with some of the best teams across the globe and has long been a trusted name in elite outrigger coaching. Her return to Singapore brought valuable hands-on learning to our shores once again.
During her short stay in the city, Corrina provided 1-on-1 coaching, crew-based training sessions focused on paddling technique, teamwork, and race preparation. Her sessions emphasized not only refining stroke technique and crew performance, but also challenged participants to shift their mindset — to "think as a crew" and approach training with shared intent and unity.
Corrina’s "coach the coach" program is a tailored learning track for paddlers who are passionate about giving back to the sport by mentoring others. Through this, participants have learnt how to break down stroke technique, give effective feedback, manage training sessions, and pass on the knowledge confidently to their club members.
In addition, Corrina led discussions around risk management — an often overlooked but critical aspect of coaching and race planning — helping participants build safer and more resilient training environments.
As Singapore prepares for upcoming regional and international races, especially next year's Singapore IVF World Sprints Championships , this coaching program came at the perfect time to sharpen skills, build stronger crews, and grow leadership within our local paddling scene.
We extend our deepest thanks to Corrina Gage for her continued commitment to growing the sport globally — and to all paddlers who joined us for this inspiring weekend of learning and connection.
Stay tuned for future coaching opportunities and community training events.
Paddle strong, paddle smart, paddle together.
